Avian influenza. What do I do?

If you find one dead bird of prey, 3 or more dead gulls or wild fowl, 5 or more dead birds of any species: report online at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/report-dead-wild-birds asap.

If you want to submit a report without providing contact details, phone Defra on 03459 33 55 77.

Do not touch or pick up any dead or dying bird. Defra May arrange to pick up dead birds to collect and test.

Use this service to report dead wild birds. Your report will help us understand how diseases are spreading.

We’ll ask you:

• where you found the dead birds

• what type of dead birds you found

• how many dead birds you found

• your contact details (find out how your personal information is used)

When you report dead wild birds, they may be collected and tested for bird flu or other cause of death.

Not all dead wild birds will be collected.

Do not touch dead wild birds

If you suspect the wild birds you have reported have died as a result of: 

• wildlife crime, you must report them to the police

• poisoning from pesticides or rodenticides, call the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme (WISS) on 0800 321 600 (calls are free)

Report other dead, sick or injured animals.
